Rewilding is increasingly debated and implemented in nature management. What is it? What is its scientific background and what is the evidence forthcoming from rewilding projects? Finally, is it more or less relevant given the escalating human transformation of the climate and the biosphere?
The speaker:
Jens-Christian Svenning is currently a professor of ecology at Aarhus University where he is leader at the Department of Biology – Ecoinformatics and Biodiversity. He also leads the Center for Biodiversity Dynamics in a Changing World (BIOCHANGE) and is head of the Danish Basic Research Fund’s Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO).
Professor Svenning is a researcher in macroecology and biogeography with a special focus on plants, animals and people across the globe. In addition to his basic curiosity for nature, Jens-Christian is driven to find solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises, and to promote sustainable societal development in general.
Jens-Christian has published over 450 peer-reviewed international scientific articles – many in leading journals such as Nature, Science and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). He was named a Highly Cited Researcher in 2021, when he was listed as one of the most influential climate scientists in the world.
