Communication is key, also when it comes to the cells within our body. One mechanism for cellular communication is by sending out tiny packages known as extracellular vesicles.
These packages contain a lot of different cellular components and can modulate the function of the cells that receive them. Extracellular vesicles from activated immune cells contain multiple pro-inflammatory molecules. This makes them highly attractive as a novel therapeutic strategy to enhance activation of the immune system to better fight cancer. On the other hand, such pro-inflammatory packages may also be a key driver for progression of
inflammatory conditions like psoriasis.
Aida Solhøj Hansen has researched cellular communication and regulation of the immune system since her PhD project and her postdoctoral training at Aarhus University, Denmark, and Stanford University, USA.
In the spring of 2024, Aida will move to the Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of Southern Denmark, where she will head a completely new research group funded by the Dr. Abildgaard Fellowship from the LEO Foundation.
